Registered nurses working with patients suffering from kidney disease and associated comorbidities are known as nephrology nurses. To work as a nephrology nurse one must receive training and education tailored specifically to the care and needs of a dialysis client.
Those interested in becoming nephrology nurses may choose to complete a training program at a facility or enroll in a master's degree nursing program at a college or university. Specific credentials and certifications showing one's competency in this specialty can be obtained after passing a qualifying exam. Those interested in this specialty should know that the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission currently offers two certification options for registered nurses: the certified nephrology nurse (CNN), as well as the certified dialysis nurse (CDN) examination and certification.
What is the job of a nephrology nurse? As a registered nurse specialized in nephrology you provide direct care to patients with end-stage renal disease. These clients receive dialysis and may receive renal transplants. Nephrology nurses are also known to hold jobs as educators, researchers, and managers of dialysis centers.
