  • The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in partnership with the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing and the Pioneer Network created a new award intended to recognize creative student learning experiences offered in a nursing home setting.

The honor titled the BSN Award for Innovative Clinical Rotation in a Nursing Home is part of a larger project called Nursing Homes as Clinical Placement Sites which is funded by the Commonwealth Fund and Picker Institute. The award was created with the intention of highlighting new and interesting ways in which schools are using nursing homes to provide real-world learning opportunities for students enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs. By offering clinical learning experiences in practice settings that cater to older adults, including nursing homes, students have the opportunity to use and enhance their skills in providing quality geriatric nursing care.

The award will be given to a school of nursing that shows excellence in use of nursing home clinical experience to integrate content related to management of older adults with complex, chronic illnesses, incorporation of the principles of culture change and person-centered care, and collaboration with a nursing home to foster an exemplary clinical training site.
