There is a growing demand for well prepared nurse educators at many junior and community colleges, universities, as well as hospital-based schools of nursing. Registered nurses who plan to obtain an advanced nursing degree and who enjoy teaching others might want to consider entering the field of nursing education.
Academic settings usually hire nurse educators for a period of nine months, from the beginning of the fall semester in September until the beginning of summer, in June. Summer teaching opportunities are also widely available for nurse educators and are reimbursed separately from those of a regular academic year. How much does a nurse educator earn? The salary of a nurse educator can be as high as $100,000 per year. Salaries vary and are affected by one's education, faculty rank, and the employing facility or institution.
Nurse educators need to have at least a master's degree in their chosen specialty. Those with advanced education and training, working for a large institution such as a big private university, earn higher salaries than nurse educators employed by small community colleges.
