  • The Essentials of Master's Education in Nursing is a collection of national standards for preparing nurses to have a high impact in the healthcare environment that is endorsed by schools of nursing affiliated with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

The Essentials of Master's Education in Nursing identifies curricular elements and frameworks required of master's programs and highlights the fundamental skills and knowledge that all U.S. master's - prepared graduates should obtain to better serve the patient care needs of the nation. Regardless of major, focus, or intended practice setting, master's program graduates should acquire the core knowledge and skills in nine foundational areas: sciences and humanities, organizational and systems leadership, quality improvement and safety, translating and integrating scholarship into practice, informatics and healthcare technologies, health policy and advocacy, inter-professional collaboration for improving outcomes, clinical prevention and population health, master's-level nursing practice. Nurses who acquire the competencies outlined above will possess the advanced knowledge and leadership skills needed to improve health outcomes in a number of current and emerging roles.
