  • State funded nursing scholarships are available for Maryland students enrolled in full-time or part-time accredited nursing programs. The Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant Program awards a total of $3,000 per academic year to nursing students enrolled in either a two-year, a four-year, or a graduate nursing program.

Individuals completing accelerated nursing degree programs may qualify for a total of $4,500 per year if the nursing program includes summer semesters. To become eligible for this state funded grant, students must be Maryland residents, be enrolled in a nursing program at a state-accredited college or university, and maintain an annual grade point average of at least 3.0. Awards are renewed on a yearly basis as long as students maintain their eligibility status. This nursing grant comes with a service obligation towards the state.

The award recipient needs to work as a registered nurse at an eligible Maryland organization authorized by the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene. The number of years one needs to work at such an organization correlates with the number of years the individual has received the state funded grant. Eligible organizations include: licensed hospitals, nursing homes, adult day care centers, home health agencies, and public health agencies.

Nursing schools nationwide rejected more than 67,000 eligible applicants seeking to enroll in professional nursing programs in 2010 compared with more than 41,000 qualified applicants in 2005, 33,000 in 2004 and 18,000 in 2003. Schools attributed the increased rejections in large part to an insufficient number of faculty members, classroom space, and poor economic conditions. The Department of Health and Human Services projects today's vacancy rate in registered nursing positions will grow to 36%, representing more than one million unfilled jobs by 2020.
