Today's health care field places great importance on evidence-based practice. This holds especially true in nursing, where the creation of new policies and ways to provide client care are greatly influenced by the outcomes of carefully conducted research.
A nurse researcher is a nurse and a scientist, with advanced graduate training, performing research in a nursing specialty. A nephrology nurse researcher is usually an advanced practice nurse conducting nursing research in the renal field. What does a nurse researcher do and where does she work? Nephrology nurse researchers work in hospitals on in dialysis units as well as in offices. Like all researchers, they are interested in collecting and analyzing data which is then used to measure specific outcomes.
Nurse researchers apply specific tools and use the scientific method to perform their work. They work to collect data from clinical practice, from different organizations and across specific population or age groups; then they evaluate and analyze things such as comorbidities, the occurrence of specific client outcomes, and the effects of different treatment techniques. The ultimate goal of nursing research is figuring out what nurses can do to have the most positive impact on a client's health and well-being.
