  • Nursing scholarships and loan repayment programs are being offered by the Health Professions Education Foundation to nursing students and nursing school graduates in California. The foundation is known for providing generous scholarships and financial assistance in the form of loan repayment programs to nursing students and practicing registered nurses, as well as to those from other professions including: allied and mental health, dental, and medical students.

Nursing students need to be enrolled in a California accredited college of nursing or university in order to qualify for scholarships from the Health Professions Education Foundation. Loan and scholarship recipients must agree to practice their profession for a predetermined number of years in a medically underserved area of the state. Individuals who received financial assistance need to provide direct client care in areas lacking qualified professional healthcare resources for one to four years, depending on the scholarship or loan specifications.

If you are a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) or student, you may qualify for $6,000 in scholarships and educational repayment loans while registered nurses (RN) with a bachelor's degree in nursing qualify for a total of $19,000. Loan repayment applications are accepted by March of every year, while scholarship applications must be submitted by September.

LPNs and LVNs must complete an accredited training program, which takes about one year. These programs are commonly in technical schools and community colleges but may occasionally be offered by high schools and hospitals as well. Practical nursing programs combine classroom learning in subjects such as anatomy, nursing, biology, and pharmacology, with supervised clinical experience. These programs give certificates in practical nursing. After getting a certificate, prospective LPNs or LVNs can take the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN. They must pass the examination in order to get a license and work as an LPN or LVN in all states.
