  • Did you know that the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association (FNSNA) has awarded over $168,000 in nursing scholarships for the 2010-2012 academic year? Founded more than sixty years ago, the National Student Nurses Association is a nonprofit organization supporting nursing students throughout the country.

The organization's main goal is to guide and mentor students enrolled in diploma, associate degree (ASN), baccalaureate (BSN), and graduate nursing programs. More than one hundred student scholarships have been given by the organization in 2011. An annual convention was held at the beginning of April 2011 in Salt Lake City, Utah to recognize the generous scholarship sponsors and their student recipients. The National Student Nurses Association Foundation is one of the important scholarship resources available to future nursing students.

Scholarships, grants, and educational loan repayment programs are being offered yearly to eligible students attending nursing programs in various states throughout the country. Each year new scholarship applications are being posted through the association website. Interested individuals are encouraged to take full advantage of this financial aid resource by completing and submitting any required paperwork before the established deadlines.

Nursing schools nationwide rejected more than 67,000 eligible applicants seeking to enroll in professional nursing programs in 2010 compared with more than 41,000 qualified applicants in 2005, 33,000 in 2004 and 18,000 in 2003. Schools attributed the increased rejections in large part to an insufficient number of faculty members, classroom space, and poor economic conditions. The Department of Health and Human Services projects today's vacancy rate in registered nursing positions will grow to 36%, representing more than one million unfilled jobs by 2020.
