Recent survey results and alarming statistics show a continuing shortage of nursing faculty across the country. Prompted by these results, a growing number of nursing colleges and universities have decided to offer education-focused master's and doctoral nursing degrees.
While these educational programs have been available before, several nursing schools are offering them for the first time. Becoming a nurse educator and teaching at the baccalaureate level and above requires completing at least a master's in nursing degree (MSN). Even though colleges and universities looking to hire nursing faculty prefer applicants who have obtained doctoral nursing degrees, nurse educators with a master's degree are highly appreciated and sought after.
According to the 2010 results from the Special Survey on Vacant Faculty Positions conducted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the top two reasons cited by nursing schools having difficulty hiring nursing faculty included: noncompetitive salaries compared to jobs in the practice field, and a limited number of doctorally-prepared faculty.
